UN to end Kosovo talks

PRISTINA, Serbia, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- There will be no further talks once a U.N. envoy announces his proposal for Serbia's mainly ethnic-Albanian Kosovo province, a media report said Tuesday.

Martti Ahtisaari, chief U.N. envoy leading the Serb-ethnic-Albanian talks, is expected to announce his proposal on the province's future status after Serbia's parliamentary elections set for Jan. 21. The proposal would be submitted to the U.N. Security Council, perhaps in March.

The Albanian-language Koha Ditore daily of Pristina quoted diplomats close to Ahtisaari as saying, "Once a proposal is announced, negotiations are finished."

When the proposal on Kosovo's future status is announced, the Serbian government in Belgrade and leaders of ethnic-Albanians in Pristina will have a month to submit remarks on the proposal.

This period would be considered as consultations and not negotiations, the diplomatic source told Koha Ditore.
